Tillsonburg will be starting 2013 with a new leader at the helm. The Town has announced the hiring of David Calder as the new Chief Administrative Officer. Calder comes to Tillsonburg from Waterloo Region, where's he's the General Manager of Corporate Services. He's also worked for municipalities of Cambridge, Woodstock, Peel and York. Tillsonburg Mayor John Lessif says aside from a vast experience in municipal administration, David Calder brings some style to the table. "We all agreed that his style really impressed us. Thoughtful answers. The references that we talked to all spoke of his abilities to lead, understand, a good listener, thinks things thoroughly through before acting on them." Calder was selected by a committee of 3, including Lessif, out of a field of 60 applicants. Lessif was on the selection committee and says this may be the biggest decision of this tenure of council. "It is the most important staff position, and I would say the most important decision a council makes is selecting a CAO to run the town, to be responsible for taxpayer dollars, and to build a team of staff to be efficient and effective." In a press release issued by the town, Calder states, "I am thrilled to be given this opportunity to utilize my extensive municipal experience as a Chief Administrative Officer to lead the Town of Tillsonburg?s administrative team. It is my personal commitment and goal to create an environment of synergy development by working closely with Council, staff, the business community and internal as well as external stakeholders with a view to enabling lasting partnerships in sustainable and progressive community enrichment initiatives." He'll start his new role in the town on January 14th. Lessif said he was unsure if Calder planned on moving to the town, saying it wasn't a prerequisite for the job.
