Tim Horton Earn a Bike Campaign Rolls Through Woodstock

Ten local children cleaned up the City for a week to earn a new bicycle, helmet and bike lock. It's part of the Tim Hortons Earn A Bike Campaign which also partners with Woodstock Police, Fire and the City. This year, the students pulled weeds, picked up garbage and even painted over graffiti in the city. Local Tim Horton owner Leslie Farrell says she is grateful to the Woodstock Police for allowing her the opportunity to give bikes to kids who may not otherwise get a new bicycle this year. "One more way we can give back and make sure kids can have a bike and they've earned it. It's not something that's been handed to them, they've actually had to be part of our community to earn it and I think they appreciate their bike a little harder when they've had to pick up a little bit of garbage and paint some walls." Participant Jordan Martel says he would recommend the program to everyone. "Well we learned about the community, how we could help and we cleaned up the environment and a whole bunch of other things. We had a lot of fun." The kids are supervised by Woodstock Police and Constable Steve McEwen says it's a great way for kids to get used to police officers in a casual setting. "They get to do some work so it's a little bit structured so we're out there with them, making sure they do some things and get them done and in the end they get a bike. So a sense of community. A little opportunity to get to earn this bike so it's not just given to them, they actually had to come out and do some work for it and hopefully instill a little bit of pride in them because it is their city." This is the 15th year the program has run in the City.
