Constable Randi Crawford called the Heart FM studio for the August edition of Tip Tuesday this morning.

OXFORD - Summer is starting to come to a close in Oxford County.

During the August edition of Tip Tuesday with the Oxford OPP, Community Safety and Media Relations Constable Randi Crawford answered questions about kick-style e-scooters, motorcycle crashes, and back to school preparation.

1) What are the rules surrounding kick-style e-scooters?

Constable Crawford says you have to be 16 or older to operate one. Those under the age of 18 have to wear a helmet, but it is recommended for operators of all ages.

Kick-style e-scooters have a max speed limit of 24 kilometres per hour, and Crawford says you should check with your municipality before taking one out in public.

"A lot of them time they could be permitted on trails or in bike lanes, but if your municipality has not said they are allowed, they are not. We will pull you over and we will tell you that you can't operate them."

Crawford says these scooters are not permitted anywhere in Oxford County, that she's aware of. You can operate one on your own private property, just not in public.

2) Three fatal motorcycle crashes have taken place in the Tillsonburg area recently. Without discussing an active investigation, what are some of the common themes you see? What can drivers and motorcyclists do differently based on those trends?

Constable Crawford says these cases very tragic, and there is usually one common factor.

"A lot of them are speed related. Whether it be the person operating the motorcycle or someone trying to pass them, you are looking at speed related incidences."

She adds space is your friend, and it's okay to go a little slower so you can leave more room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.

She says 63 motor vehicle fatalities have been reported on West Region OPP patrolled roads so far this year. Seven of those crashes were motorcycle related, including the three in Oxford County the listener referred to in their question. Crawford says the ages range from 35 to 74, adding even the most experienced operators can be involved in a collision.

3) Back to school season is upon us! What should everyone keep in mind?

Constable Crawford says the new school year is often seen as a new beginning, and it's a time for everyone to get back into their regular routine.

"We are such a rushing society in general, so this is a good time for us to check our routine and make sure we are allowing enough time for buses, crossing guards, kids crossing the road and things like that. This is for everyone to watch out for, not just the kids and the families."

Crawford says you should also be mindful of school zone speed limits, and designated pickup and drop off areas. She's also reminding drivers to not park in no parking areas, adding the rules are in place for a reason.
