Tips for Pet Owners During Cold Winter Months

The Oxford County Animal Rescue says you should bundle your dog up before going for a walk.

OXFORD COUNTY - If you have to bundle up before going for a walk, you should make sure your dog is bundled up too.

Anna Holmes with the Oxford County Animal Rescue says coats and sweaters are essential for dogs around this time of the year.

"They all have that fur but if you're going to have a dog that's going to be outside for long periods of time, lets say you're going to the park with the kids and you're tobogganing and the dogs are out there with you, they're going to get cold just the same as we are."

Investing in a good pair of dog boots is also a good idea, but putting boots on a dog is not always an easy task.

Holmes suggests training them while they're puppies.

"Get them accustomed to having those coverings on their feet because it's not normal for them so they want to shake them off, they want to bite them off and they want to pull them off."

If you ever need to surrender a pet to the rescue, don't just leave it on the Oxford County Animal Rescue's door step especially during the winter months.

Their Woodstock office is not staffed 24 hours and Holmes says a small cat could easily succumb to the cold if it's left outside in -20 degree temperatures.

Holmes says it's free to surrender an animal and it's also free to reclaim your pet if someone else finds it and brings it in.
