Zorra extends its moratorium on gravel pits and quarries for up to a year.
ZORRA - The Township of Zorra has extended their moratorium on new or expanded gravel pits and stone quarries in the Township.
Zorra is currently home to 48 licensed sand, gravel, and quarry operations which are all situated in close proximity to each other. CAO Don Macleod tells Heart FM the planning department is still in the information gathering stage and they want to make sure they get the aggregate policy review right.
"Right now the planning department is still in the information gathering stage, they have reviewed policies from across the province from other major aggregate producing municipalities and in order to make sure we get the policies right, they are just taking a extra cautious look at these policies to make sure that we do it right. The Township council grew very frustrated with the province in the way that there was no regard given to looking at cumulative impacts on the number of gravel pits in one small geographic area of the township."
Macleod says the compounding impacts of noise, dust and traffic were a real concern for residents and council. The moratorium will likely last until April when they have a more concrete Aggregate Policy review.
"A fairly simple matter under the planning act that council pass a by-law to extend that period for no more than one more year, so council doesn't anticipate extending it for that full year - we fully anticipate that policies will be in place before April."
