Canada's first openly gay public school board Chair has been re-elected to serve on the Thames Valley District School Board for a second term.
OXFORD COUNTY - A London lawyer has been re-elected as the Vice-Chair to the Thames Valley District School Board for a second term.
Matthew Reid praised his fellow trustees in his victory speech for their commitment to diversity as Reid is Canada's first openly gay public school board Chair.
Reid has a number of dedicated years under his belt, and has served as a Trustee in 2014 and was elected Vice-Chair in 2015. In 2003-2004 Reid became the President of the Ontario Student Trustees Association in 2003-2004.
In his speech, he also mentioned the impressive number of TVDSB secondary schools that held events this year to support the annual International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia. The praise continued as Reid talked about the board welcoming newcomers from Syria into the school system, as well for being the first school board in Canada to elect an Indigenous Student Trustee.
Meanwhile, Middlesex County Trustee Arlene Morell has also been re-elected Vice-Chair for a second term. Morell has served as one of two Trustees since 2014 for the County of Middlesex. Morell has also served as Chair of the Thames Valley Parent Involvement Committee, and as President of Thames Valley Council of Home and School Associations.
The inaugural Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2017 at 7 p.m.
