Unifor reached a tentative deal with GM Canada over the weekend and the results of the ratification vote will be released at some point today.
INGERSOLL - We'll know at some point today if members of Unifor decided to ratify the tentative deal with GM Canada.
The deal includes a $1-billion investment towards the CAMI plant, so it can begin large scale commercial production of EV600 electric vans next year.
The ratification vote was held yesterday and the results will be released at some point today.
Premier Doug Ford also released a joint statement with Economic Development Minister Vic Fedeli yesterday saying the deal is great news for Ingersoll and the rest of the province.
You can read the full statement below;
“This deal is good news for the hard-working people of Ingersoll, the surrounding region, and for all of Ontario. Unifor and General Motors have worked together to reach a tentative deal that will further strengthen Ontario’s world class auto sector for its workers, their families, and the communities they live in.
GM’s proposed $1 billion investment would create Canada’s first large-scale commercial electric vehicle manufacturing plant. This agreement builds on the momentum of several significant announcements in recent months for Ontario’s auto sector, which has now seen nearly $6 billion in new investments, technologies, and upgrades for facilities across the province.
Investments like these are a clear sign that the steps our government is taking to support Ontario’s manufacturing sector, and the thousands of workers that rely on it, are working. This announcement is an important signal that Ontario’s economy remains competitive even in these difficult times.
Our government will continue to work alongside our federal counterparts, the auto industry and its workers to create the right conditions to protect and grow good quality “Ontario Made” auto sector jobs over the long-term, and ensure it remains healthy, sustainable and competitive in the decades to come.”
