United Way Oxford is collecting donations of menstrual hygiene products to address period poverty in our community.
OXFORD - United Way Oxford is working to address period poverty locally through the Period Promise campaign, formerly known as Tampon Tuesday.
Marketing and Communications Manager Macy LeConte explains the reason behind the name change.
"Last year, United Way all around the world decided to rebrand and focus more delivering a promise and making the promise that this is a continued issue and we will continue to work to resolve it. Make it more like a pledge almost."
Donations of pads, tampons, and other menstrual hygiene products are currently being accepted at all of the local Shoppers Drug Mart locations. We have five here in Oxford with two in Woodstock (959 Dundas Street and 333 Dundas Street), one in Tillsonburg (200 Broadway Street), one in Ingersoll (120 Thames Street), and one in Norwich (19 Stover Street).
Donations of products and/or cash can also be dropped off during the three networking events scheduled for Tuesday, March 3rd. They will all be taking place from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and you can find a list of the locations below:
Woodstock - Montana's BBQ & Bar (511 Norwich Ave)
Tillsonburg - Kelsey's Original Roadhouse (247 Broadway Street)
Ingersoll - Scotch & Ponder (169 Thames Street South)
Admission will be free (with you donation) and snacks will be provided.
LeConte says period poverty affects one in six Canadians who menstruate, and that is not the only scary statistic.
"One in five Canadians who menstruate say they may not be able to afford period products in the next year. That's going with inflation and all sorts of stuff, but that is a really scary stat when you think about your own health and planning long term."
United Way Oxford has been running this campaign for the past eight years now. It raised a record amount last year, with 1,413 boxes of products going to 20 local organizations in the community.
You can also provide a monetary donation through the United Way Oxford website online here.
Macy LeConte stopped by the Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Friday, February 20th. You can listen to the full interview below:
