Warden Marcus Ryan explained that although they are proud to provide these resources, the number of resources needed really highlights the issue.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County has provided un update with their 10-year shelter plan.
In accordance with the Housing Services Act, County council members have been working to tackle housing issues in the county. The County was happy to be able to provide more housing resources to Oxford Residents.
In 2022 there were three additional rental units built. The new buildings added a total of 92 new affordable housing units in Oxford County. Also, two more rental units were initiated in Woodstock and Tillsonburg, with a second Woodstock unit being approved for funding.
A total of 68 households were approved and received rent subsidies. Lastly, the County was able to launch the My Second Unit program, which offers residents a government grant to go towards creating legal rental units in homes.
Warden Marcus Ryan explained that although they are proud to provide these resources, the number of resources needed really highlights the issue.
"The fact that we need to allocate so many resources to a shelter plan and emergency shelters is an indication that as a society we are not doing enough to make sure that the quantity and the types of housing people really need are available."
Council first approved the plan in 2015, and we are in the year eight for planning. Warden Ryan says the County has more resources left to exhaust before the 10-year plan comes to an end.
