For the past 17 years kids in Norwich have been enjoying the programs offered by the Upper Deck Youth Centre.
NORWICH - Every Week the Norwich Upper Deck Youth Centre helps about 70 students from the Township.
They have programs for kids between the ages of 9 to 18. Satellite Director Jacqueline Armstrong says their most popular programs are their boys and girls clubs.
"The clubs teach the kids life skills and encourages the kids to see their potential and help them reach their potential. We have a leadership program that we run for grades 7-9. It is about teaching leadership and leadership skills and encouraging our kids to dare to be different. We have a Friday night supper club, we provide a free supper every Friday night for our students. We have a lot of kids coming in who weren't having family meals or healthy meals and we also have our drop in night. We usually have about 40 kids who drop in on Friday night."
The youth centre is going through some renovations right now with a fresh look designed to give it a relaxed welcoming feel.
"We have been around for 17 years and have not done any renovations for the past 11 years. So we decided we needed to update it and give it a fresh new look for our young people. We really wanted to embrace our older kids, we have a lot of younger kids, so we want to give a coffee house feel to make it a more relaxed welcoming centre. We have some new furniture, new flooring in, new counter and new tables for kids to sit at.
Armstrong says the renovation was made possible thanks to a generous donation from the community.
"The money was donated in the memory of Josh Knapp by his parents. Josh was a young man who had an impact in his friends lives and challenged his friends to take a look at their lives and do something different. He died of cancer at the age of 18."
