Local artists can now apply for the chance to establish a figurative sculpture garden in Woodstock.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Art Gallery is looking for Ontario artists to submit expressions of interest to establish a figurative sculpture garden.
This garden was made possible thanks to a generous donation from local artist and teacher, the late Bruce Flowers. Flowers left a good portion of his estate to the Art Gallery and Curator Mary Reid says they want to honour his vision.
"Part of the money was put into a trust and we have also been able to establish, as per his request a public sculpture garden. So the first stage of that was the establishment of the Florence Carlyle Park, which now also has a portion of that called the Bruce Flowers garden."
Reid says right now they are just accepting applications.
"We really believe in paying artists for their work. So we are asking people that are interested in being considered for the competition to send us their qualifications, we will then review them and we will short list three artists and pay them a stipend, to work up a proper proposal."
The selected artist will be awarded a $55,000 commission for the completion of the project. Installation of the artwork is expected to take place in 2023.
Applications are due Oct. 26, 2021 at 11:59 p.m., and can be submitted to the Woodstock Art Gallery by mail or email. Full details can be found online here.
