Walkers will be supporting Lupus at Southside Park this week.
WOODSTOCK - The 8th annual Lupus Walk in the Friendly City is just around the corner.
On June 9th the walk gets underway at Southside Park. Registration is at 10:00 a.m. and the walk sets off at 11:00 a.m.
Walk Coordinator, Jan Ropp says Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease.
"The immune system is our bodies defenses against bacteria and viruses. People with Lupus, their body can't tell the difference between intruders and what is actually your own tissue, basically its fighting its own body."
Ropp adds that so little is known about Lupus.
"It is predominantly in women. One in 1000 people have it, it is pretty high compared to some of the other illnesses and diseases out there."
Over the past seven years of walking Woodstock has raised almost $50,000 towards research, support and awareness for the disease. Last year alone over $10,000 was raised.
If you'd like to participate in the walk you can contact Jan Ropp at janropp@yahoo.com or on the Walk For Lupus Ontario website.
