Water Rates

Tillsonburg to see a lower than expected increase while Woodstock's rates will freeze for 2015 and 2016

When the County's water and wastewater rates are approved, it will be without the proposed Source Water Protection fee.

At Wednesday night's County Council meeting Director of Public Works Rob Walton said the fee was removed from the proposed bylaw for the time being.

Walton tells Heart FM there was great debate amongst councillors on whether Source Water Protection should be solely on the backs of water rate users or if there should be some use of taxation.

"In 2014 council should have some wholesome debate on what the whole business plan on Source Water Protection is and how it should be funded, what other sources of funding there should be besides this. I do believe we will be bringing this right back whether it's the exact same, I think the gist of how it would be applied is part of the equation and the potential for taxation is part of the equation too."

Tillsonburg residents are getting a bit of a break when it comes to water and wastewater rates as Mayor John Lessif requested an increase of just three percent for the next three years as opposed to the proposed 7 percent increase from County staff.

Director of Public Works Rob Walton...

"The whole question there is to when the wastewater treatment plant will be required in Tillsonburg and it depends when the flows are there to justify it and right now it looks as though it will be at a later time then was originally proposed so this does not put that system in jeopardy."

Meanwhile Woodstock's rates will be frozen for 2015 and 2016 as Mayor Pat Sobeski received support from City Council on the motion back at the October 3 meeting.

Walton tells Heart FM freezing Woodstock's rates will not impact the rest of the County.

Walton says Woodstock does have relatively healthy reserves so a freeze on the rates wouldn't put the City in jeopardy.

The final water wastewater bylaw will be presented to council November 13.
