The Tavistock and District Historical Society is hosting a discussion on the Black Sox scandal from 100 years ago involving members of the Chicago White Sox.
TAVISTOCK - There will be a discussion on the Black Sox scandal from the 1919 World Series next week.
The Tavistock and District Historical Society will be hosting the discussion, which will feature Allen Tait, who is a member of the Society of American Baseball Research.
Organizer Paul Bartlett says the sport is popular in Tavistock and it's a good opportunity to look at baseball.
"We looked at what happened 100 years ago in 1919 and the thing that came to mind was the Black Sox scandal where the members of the Chicago White Sox baseball, they weren't very well paid in those days, so a gambler approached them to throw the series and apparently they did. There was an investigation and eight of them were banned from baseball."
"Shoeless" Joe Jackson was among the members who were involved. Tait will discuss new research on the scandal.
He adds that a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in Saint Mary's put them in touch with Tait.
"There is a real interest in baseball in this area and with the World Series on right now, baseball is front and centre of people's minds so it's a good time that people will be interested in it."
Bartlett says they host these discussions once a year featuring topics of historical interest. He says for the past five years they've focused on World War I.
The topic is a part of their Speaker Series, which will take place next Wednesday evening.
It will be happening inside of the Grace United Church.
It is free to attend and starts at 7:30.
