City Council has approved the Canadian National Railway's plans for the Finkle Street pedestrian bridge.
WOODSTOCK - The Finkle Street pedestrian bridge is finally getting rebuilt in Woodstock.
It has been closed down since 2021 due to safety concerns, but City Council voted in favour of replacing it during Thursday's meeting.
The bridge is owned by Canadian National Railway, and Mayor Jerry Acchione says they're going to make it fully accessible for everyone.
"There is a switchback, an extra 120 meters being added to the bridge to be gradual to make sure that it will be fully accessible for everybody."
It has always been a shortcut from one side of town straight to Southside Park, with many individuals having great memories of it and using it, including Acchione.
"I raised my family right around the corner from it, my daughters and I would walk across it virtually every weekend, we'd always stand there and wait for trains to go, it was fascinating; they loved it. Then we would go play at the park with them, so personally, I have a lot of great memories of the bridge."
It is unknown when the replacement will start, but Acchione hopes it will later this year.
