Prime Minister Mark Carney says retaliatory tariffs on American goods will be in effect beginning in September. Carney held a media conference on Saturday, addressing Canadians after trade talks broke down at the eleventh hour on Friday. He called his decision to pull Canadian negotiators out of Washington a choice to walk away from a “bad deal”. Canada will match Washington’s new tariffs dollar-for-dollar in industries including dairy, agricultural equipment, steel, electronics and pulp and paper. Addressing concerns of Canadian workers affected by the new tariffs, Carney says support for those sectors will be announced in the next few days.
