WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Art Gallery has a new Head of Collections.
Nell Wheal has been tasked to oversee the permanent collection of more than 1,900 artworks and artifacts. Wheal was most recently the Curator of Exhibitions and Education at Gallery Stratford. She holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph and a Masters of Art Gallery and Museum Studies from the University of Leeds in England. Wheal says she is thrilled to working here in Woodstock.
"I'm thrilled to be joining the small but mighty team here at the Woodstock Art Gallery. The Gallery’s permanent collection celebrates the cultural heritage of Woodstock and Oxford County, and I look forward to supporting this important community resource."
The permanent collection showcases works by local, regional and national artists, with a particular focus on the work of Woodstock artist Florence Carlyle. Director/Curator of the Art Gallery Mark Reid says Wheal will play a critical role in maintaining and promoting the collection.
"In the very short time that Nell has been here she has made significant strides in moving the organization and management of the permanent collection forward. A recent example is the establishment of a new art storage vault on the second floor."
The Woodstock Art Gallery is Oxford County's largest municipal public gallery and is part of the Cultural Services Department of the City of Woodstock.
