"Since I was little my dad told me, 'you came to this world to serve' so that's what I'm trying to do."

WOODSTOCK -  A Woodstock business owner got more than he expected during his "pay what you want" promotion.

Barbershop owner Rosso Villamill says a customer at his Stratford shop was insistent on getting a price at first.

"He said, 'No, I need to know how much'. I said, 'no, no, no, no, whatever you want.' At the end in a funny way, he said, 'okay if you want I'll bring potatoes and meat.' So, a couple hours after he brought potatoes and meat."

Villamill says this has inspired him to continue this promotion once a month to collect food for the food bank.

"We're off on Mondays. So, we can use at least one Monday every month to trade our haircut service for food to help families in need (through) a local (food) bank."

Originally coming to Canada from Columbia in 2008, Villamill and his family moved to the area in 2019. The pandemic put his plans to open a barbershop in Woodstock on hold until July 2020.

Since then, he has opened another two shops in Ingersoll and Stratford. Villamill used the downtime to teach his children and extended family how to cut hair. They now help him run the business.

Villamill says he hopes other businesses will also be motivated to donate food, especially with rising food costs affecting more people.

"Since I was little my dad told me, 'you came to this world to serve' so that's what I'm trying to do."

As for the original trade deal, Villamill says his wife turned it into a "delicious" shepherd's pie.
