WOODSTOCK - Fireworks enforcement will be discussed at the next Woodstock City Council meeting.
Councillor Kate Leatherbarrow brought forward a notice of motion during yesterday's meeting, asking staff to look into recent complaints surrounding fireworks. City staff will also research how other communities have handled issues surrounding municipal fireworks bylaw enforcement.
Her motion reads as follows:
That Woodstock City Council direct staff to prepare a report regarding recent complaints and corresponding enforcement of non-compliance with Municipal Code Chapter 802 - Fireworks, specifically with respect to section 802.11.1 and the discharge of fireworks outside approved holidays;
And further that the report include a review of actions being taken by other municipalities to combat similar non-compliance, including information on the option of banning the sale and discharge of fireworks outright.
In a video posted on her Facebook page, Leatherbarrow explains why she brought the motion forward.
"When I was elected, probably in early November, I heard from residents in different parts of the city that were really concerned about fireworks being set off almost every weekend, likely less in the colder months, but it's an ongoing issue with enforcement. We already have bylaws about fireworks and being set on specific holidays and it's become I think a concern and frustrating. One resident was particularly concerned about the stress it causes to their furry family members."
The matter will return to City Council on March 16th.
