City council is behind the Town of Kearney when it comes to having a more accurate voting ballot for municipal elections.
WOODSTOCK - The City of Woodstock is supporting the Town of Kearny's decision to create more accurate voters list for municipal elections.
The Town of Kearney asked for council's support on creating more accurate voting ballots during a council meeting on January 17th.
Mayor Trevor Birtch says it's been a challenge for voters across Ontario, particularly in Woodstock.
"I did hear back from several people after the election on voting day that even though they had lived in the same house for a number of years, and had voted provincially and federally, for some reason MPAC had them off the list so we'd like to get that rectified."
The voter ballots are formed by the the Preliminary List of Electors for voters' forms in the province and the Municipal Property Assessment Corporation (MPAC) provides data for those lists.
Some of the issues with the lists include inaccuracy and outdated information.
Birtch adds they want to create more accurate and quality voting lists.
"We want to make sure we have the best lists possible and this is an concern of municipalities all across Ontario. We do not want to have anyone discouraged from taking part in an open democratic process."
Council is working with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs, Ministry of Finance and Oxford MPP Ernie Hardeman to resolve the issue.
