Woodstock firefighters responded to 2 major fires in the span of 48 hours over the weekend.
WOODSTOCK - It has been a crazy 48 hours for the Woodstock Fire Department who dealt with two major fires over the weekend.
On Saturday 22 firefighters responded to a structure fire on Dundas Street at a public storage facility. Crews were eventually able to knock down the stubborn blaze and the estimated damage right now is pegged at $200,000. Public Information Officer Lisa Woods tells Heart FM they also responded to a house fire last night at 258 Dundas Street.
"Upon arrival we did have smoke showing at the front of the residence and a primary search did locate a single resident who was removed and sent to the Woodstock Hospital via EMS."
Woodstock Police have confirmed that a woman who was taken to the hospital and has since been pronounced deceased following the Dundas fire. Damage to the home is pegged at roughly $95,000. The name of the deceased is not being released at this time and the cause of death will be determined by an autopsy.
An investigation is ongoing for the cause of both fires and in both cases foul play is not suspected.
Acting Fire Chief Jeff Slager says the weekend serves as a reminder for the importance of fire safety.
"While a cause for this incident has not yet been determined, we cannot stress basic fire safety enough. Ensuring every level of your home has a working smoke alarm can literally be the difference between life and death."
