Woodstonians are honouring the 80th anniversary of D-Day at home and abroad.
WOODSTOCK - Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day.
It's known as the beginning of the end of World War II. A total of 160,000 Allied troops landed on the beaches of France back on June 6th, 1944 to take Europe back from the Nazi regime.
The soldiers stormed the shores of five codenamed beaches - Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The 14,000 Canadian troops stormed Juno Beach with the British, and 359 of them did not survive.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Prince William attended a special ceremony at Juno Beach this morning to commemorate the anniversary. They were joined by veterans and a delegation of students from Huron Park Secondary School was also in attendance.
Here in Woodstock, Legion Branch 55 will be hosting its own D-Day commemoration ceremony tonight with a 6:00 p.m. start time.
