The clinic now offers 15 treatment chairs and three exam rooms.
WOODSTOCK - The ribbon has been cut for the newly designed and renovated chemotherapy and IV infusion clinic at the Woodstock Hospital.
The official ceremony was held yesterday evening with hospital officials and donors in attendance.
Hospital President and CEO Perry Lang says this renovation has been in the works for quite some time now.
"The renovation has been 14 months in undertaking. We started the design process long before that with our patient advisors Nora and Deb who have been longtime chemotherapy patients at the hospital."
The advisors suggested more natural lighting, so the new renovation includes large windows to accommodate that. Lang says they also got to pick out the treatment chairs and the paint colour for the walls.
The clinic first opened 13 years ago in partnership with the London Regional Cancer Program, now known as the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre. Lang says this expansion was needed because they have seen a sharp increase in the number of visits since then.
"Currently we are seeing about 2,800 clinic visits a year. With this renovation we will over time be able to see almost double that capacity."
The clinic used to offer eight treatment chairs and three exam rooms, but it now has 15 treatment chairs and three exam rooms. It offers treatment pods of four, complete with flexible partitions to provide more privacy for the patients.
It also features a new LED light behind the victory bell, so it can show the colour that represents the cancer the patient had while they ring it.
You can see a virtual walkthrough of the new clinic online here.
The renovation cost $2.7 million and it was fully funded by the Woodstock Hospital Foundation. Chair Ron Burns says it would not have been possible without their generous donors.
"Not only did our donors support this project financially, but they also shared their personal stories to help inspire others in the community to give. Cancer touches so many lives and by coming together, we have expanded the clinic's capacity so that more people can receive care close to home."
The large donors include $500,000 from Ken and Roberta Sommers, $450,000 from the estate of Annette Vriends, $350,000 from Doug and Patti Bell, $250,000 from Maglin Site Furniture, and $100,000 from the Verspeeten family.
