The only way for the Mayor to leave office is for him to resign or if he is sentenced to imprisonment.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch has not released any kind of statement after reports of his criminal charges became public.
London Police have charged the Mayor with assault, sexual assault and sexual assault with choking.
Heart FM has reached out to Birtch for comment and he has not responded to those requests and has not made any sort of public comment on the matter. Birtch is also a Oxford County councillor. The next County council meeting is Wednesday.
Heart FM reached out to Oxford County Communications who confirmed that the Mayor can still attend council after facing criminal charges.
"The County Clerk, Chloe Senior, has confirmed that under the Municipal Act, criminal charges do not disqualify someone from serving on council or voting in elections, nor do councils have the power to remove an elected member from office, even if the person is charged or convicted. It is only if an individual is sentenced to imprisonment would that person be prevented from holding office."
Warden Larry Martin provided the following statement as well.
"This is now a matter before the courts and we await the outcome along with the rest of the community. For now, our thoughts are with everyone impacted by this news."
Heart FM has also reached out to Woodstock City councillors. We will update this story if they do decide to comment.
The next Oxford County council meeting is this Wednesday at 9:30 am. You can watch the livestream here.
