WOODSTOCK - A local pharmacist is facing a number of drug charges after police executed search warrants in Kitchener and Woodstock.
The Woodstock Police Service Criminal Intelligence and Drug Enforcement Unit have been investigating the pharmacist for trafficking prescription narcotics for a long time. Three people have been arrested after the warrants were executed on Tuesday.
Local pharmacist in Woodstock and resident of Kitchener 46 year old Yogesh Patel has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime.
Also arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking is 41 year old William Minton and 41 year old Becky Staples, both from Woodstock. Minton is also facing a weapons related charge.
Police say they seized $35,000 worth of Fentanyl, Hydromorphone, Morphine, Nabilone and Oxycodone from the three homes along with $3,000 in cash.
Woodstock Police are still investigating and more charges could be forthcoming. They did say they were happy to get these drugs off the streets.
"The abuse and trafficking of opiate prescriptions has devastating effects on both the individual and the community. Specifically, Fentanyl related overdoses and deaths have increased significantly, not only in our community, but across the country over the past few years."
