WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police Chief has issued a video message regarding the planned "Freedom Protest" on Sunday afternoon in Downtown Woodstock.
Here is the statement from Police Chief Daryl Longworth:
"As you are all likely aware, there is a rally being planned in Woodstock this weekend to protest the restrictions related to COIVD-19. The police service has received a number of calls from members of the public who have expressed concern for their safety. I want you to know that we hear your concerns and I want to assure you that the Woodstock Police Service is actively developing an operational plan for the day that will make sure that a sufficient number of officers are in place.
"These officers will be deployed to ensure the safety of everyone present and ensure that this event does not interfere with those who operate businesses or reside in our community. We do understand that this is a delicate and divisive matter for people who passionately represent both sides on this issue. Our police response will try to balance the right to a peaceful protest as guaranteed by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms with the need for compliance with public health orders.
The role of the police throughout this pandemic has been to maintain the health and safety of the community by ensuring compliance with Emergency Orders and where necessary, lay charges in relation to violations of those orders based on consultations with public health and the Ministry of the Attorney General. That role will continue this weekend.
Public safety is our priority as is the maintenance of peace and enforcement of laws to protect the citizens of our community."
