Woodstock Take Part in Crime Prevention Week

Woodstock Police want to hear from you during Crime Prevention Week as they celebrate community partnerships.

The Woodstock Police are hoping to reconnect with the citizens of Woodstock during Crime Prevention Week.

This week is being recognized across the province by many different groups. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen says the theme this year is community partnership. "Single handedly the police can't, on their own, solve all the crimes within the city without the support of community partners so it's really important that we reach out to people and we engage in conversation. And that's kind of the purpose of all the events that I've organized."

VanLeeuwen says it's important to engage the community in crime prevention. "We have a very diverse community so we're reaching out to a diverse population of people so they can express to us, face to face, what concerns they have, we can share with them different crime prevention strategies that we're working on - really open up communications so we can keep the city of Woodstock as safe as it is."

Among the events they have planned, VanLeewen says they will be bringing in 10 students for take your kid to work day. "So those 10 participants will come and spend the day with police officers at the police station and they're going to learn all kinds of aspects of policing. One of the pieces is the crime prevention part. It's just another opportunity for us to engage with youth, share what we do, they can share their ideas with us so we can make the community safer."

The injury prevention team will also be going out to a local high school to teach the dangers of distracted driving. The police will also be launching a Lock It or Loose It campaign and be visiting several local organizations with coffee and doughnuts.
