Woodstock's Transit Terminal is officially open. While the first bus left the new terminal at 6:30 the morning of February 19th, the City held the grand opening for the $1.1 million facility Friday. Long time driver Brian Chapman says he didn't think he would ever see a terminal of this caliber come to Woodstock. "It's exciting. It's the biggest thing I've seen that's positive to happen to Woodstock transit ever. I started in '82 and of course it was Wellington and Dundas and it was a very dangerous place up there and it took so much time for people to go from one bus to another because they had to go through the traffic lights." Chapman says the new system also saves a lot of time as riders step on and off buses at the same location and drivers no longer have to wait lengthy periods of time to merge with traffic. Transit Supervisor Wendy Strickler says riders love the new terminal, especially those with special needs as they don't need to transfer in the business of downtown. "We have had a little bit of a struggle because York Street used to be a through street , so some people who lived her before think that now that it's open it's a through street again so we have struggled a little bit to try and educate the public. We've resigned everything but we still get the occasional person coming through that shouldn't be here." The new terminal came at a cost of $1.1-million, which also included the purchase and demolition of the former Swiss Chalet building.
