After an unexpected setback, the Woodstock Habitat for Humanity projects are moving forward with construction.
WOODSTOCK - After some early setbacks, Habitat for Humanity is moving forward with their Woodstock builds.
CEO for Habitat for Humanity Heartland Ontario, Jeff Duncan says local residents can expect to see activity on Main Street this week. "Excavators will be back in for the next week, week and a half. They'll be back in there and getting ready for the foundations. As soon as that step is done and you start to pour the foundations, the house starts to take shape very quickly. That first couple of weeks you see an awful lot of activity. Before you know it we'll have a roof on it. So that's the next phase, get the main floor in, build the two storeys, get the roof on, get it shingled, and then what we call closing the house in so then we can start working inside."
The builds were originally postponed when unsuitable soil conditions were found at the site. Duncan says it took some careful planning to overcome that obstacle. "We found debris from an old building that had been sort of broken up and left there instead of being removed and replaced with soils. Soils - mixed gravel and things - that couldn't be compacted to properly support the construction of two homes. So we had some engineers in and we did a bunch of testing and so on and came up with a plan to remove that material and replace it with a material that would support the foundation properly."
Over the next 4 - 5 months volunteers will be diligently working on the houses with the hopes of getting the families into their new abodes by Thanksgiving. Volunteers are still needed for every aspect, from framing to plumbing and even for the final clean up.
