Woodstock's Royal Canadian Sea Cadets and the Navy League Cadets are celebrating major milestones this weekend.
WOODSTOCK - The Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps 153 Woodstock is celebrating its 75th anniversary this weekend in the Friendly City.
Joining them in the celebration is the Navy League Cadet Corps who are celebrating their 30th anniversary.
Civilian Instructor with the Sea Cadets Trevor McLennan says it is a pretty big deal to have served the community since 1940. "It's 75 years and 30 years in the City of Woodstock, and a big part of it is we are looking for support."
Mayor Trevor Birtch will bestow Freedom of the City to both corps who will be having a parade through Woodstock on June 13 starting at 1 p.m. at Woodstock City Hall.
After the parade they are going to have a fundraising dinner, Dining Ashore, at the Woodstock Auditorium starting at 6 p.m.
The sea cadets have provided education, seamanship and leadership training to thousands of young people from across Oxford County since 1940 and it doesn't cost any money for kids to join.
Freedom of the City is an ancient honour provided to military units which allows them to parade through the city with colours flying, drums beating, band playing and bayonets fixed. In ancient times, military units were not permitted within the city walls unless they were granted Freedom of the City. This tradition continues today, and is one of the highest honours a unit may receive from their city.
You can buy tickets for the dinner at www.woodstockseacadets.com or at www.diningashore.com.
