A young man has made Woodstock proud as he brings home the silver from the National Wrestling Championships.
WOODSTOCK - A Woodstock wrestler is now sporting a silver medal after winning big in Windsor.
Damion Watson placed second in the 85kg weight class at the National Wrestling Championship over the weekend. Watson's original goal going into the tournament was to win just one match.
"It was pretty nerve wracking when I got there but after my first match I started getting less nervous and I got more confident in how I was going to perform and I did pretty well."
Watson competed in seven matches over a two day period, winning all of them with the exception of the final. He tells Heart FM there were definitely points in the competition where he felt like the underdog.
"My second match I had to go against a kid that's been wrestling for nine years and he stunned the weight class. No one thought I was going to win the match and I barely won it 6-6, I pinned him in the last 10 seconds."
Watson is a Grade 10 student at College Avenue Secondary School. He trains at the Iron Monkey MMA and Fitness Club in Woodstock alongside his coach Gary McQuaid.
