For the first time in six years, Woodstock will be hosting a Take Back The Night March in order to raise awareness for violence against women and children.
WOODSTOCK - Take Back the Night is one step closer to returning to Woodstock now that council has granted approval for the march.
Part of the Organizing Committee for the Oxford Take Back the Night Linda Smith says it’s all about raising awareness for violence against women and children.
"We hope that by raising awareness and by not hiding this issue in the closet or making it go away by being silent, we're going to shout it out and make sure people are aware of it because the only way to solve a problem is to make sure people are aware of it."
Smith tells Heart FM last time they planned a Take Back the Night March for Woodstock, they had to cancel because of a lighting storm. That was almost six years ago. The March rotates around different parts of the county each year to bring as much awareness as possible.
The planning is well underway for the September 15th march according to Smith.
"We march on the street, we wave banners, we sometimes shout chants and it’s to get us heard. In the preliminaries to the march we'll have some guest speakers and we have a dancer planned who will dance her award winning dance to 'This Is My Fight Song.'"
