World Crokinole Championships 2017

Crokinole players from across Canada and the United States will meet up in Tavistock for the World Crokinole Championships.

TAVISTOCK - Tavistock is hosting the World Crokinole Championships today!

Doubles action will get underway at the Tavistock and District Rec Centre starting at 8am. Board Coordinator John Schultz says the afternoon will be packed with the singles divisions.

"With the singles we have five different categories. We have what we call the adults the more competitive ones, we have a recreational for ones who maybe aren't quite so serious, we have cue shooters then we have juniors and intermediates."

Schultz adds the approximately 300 players participating have come from far and wide.

"We have them playing from coast to coast for Canada; we have them from Newfoundland and we have them from BC. We have probably 25 or 30 coming from the States and I think there's 15 or something like that coming from PEI. We are drawing them from across the country and from the States!

Approximately 37 percent of all the players are also new to the game!

The championships should wrap up a around 9pm and $6,800 in prize money will be handed out to the winners in each division.

The first known crokinole board was built by Eckhardt Wettlaufer of Sebastopol in 1871. Sebastopol is about a two minute drive north of Tavistock.
