A 5 year, $500 000 commitment from city council to assist the YMCA of Woodstock with their renovations is coming to a close.
WOODSTOCK - The YMCA of Woodstock is looking forward to bringing even more programs to the community with the help of Woodstock City Council.
A group from the YMCA attended city council last week to provide an update on the progress of their renovations. General Manager of the YMCA in Woodstock, Andrea Nelson, says this meeting marked a major milestone: "We made our presentation to accept our final instalment of a 5 year commitment that the City of Woodstock made to our capital campaign back in 2011 to renovate our building on Dundas St."
"The project cost $3 million - $500 000 of that came over 5 years from the City of Woodstock," says Nelson. "Major changes; the whole building has been really torn apart and renovated. We have, overall, 80% more useable space in the Y for fitness programs, child and youth programs, camp, etc."
Nelson is excited to not only have more space but more programs for all ages. "We are definitely focused in on children and youth and seeing them reach their best potential, and our building was in desperate need of some help. We actually increased our program offerings by 30% for child, youth and family and 35% for our adult programs."
The branch is currently trying to combat the ever growing problem of obesity, isolation, and trying to build a stronger community.
