The Delta variant is responsible for 90% of the new cases in the region and 80% of new cases are not vaccinated.
The Delta variant is the main variant of COVID-19 circulating in the Southwestern Public Health Region.
Local Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Joyce Lock says the Delta variant spreads more easily.
"The Delta variant is now the cause of more than 90% of the COVID-19 infections in Ontario, sometimes this Delta variant causes people to get sick with COVID, even if they are fully vaccinated. These infections are called breakthrough infections because they break through the immunity of the vaccine."
Dr. Lock says the vaccines still protect you from the Delta variant.
"The positive news though, is the people who experience a break through infection get less sick. Their illness is usually mild and doesn't last as long and they are a way less likely to end up with serious illness, end up in hospital or in the intensive care unit."
Over 80% of the new COVID-19 cases in the SWPH region are unvaccinated and most cases are in people under the age of 40.
