Youth in Policing Initiative Returns in Woodstock

Aspiring young police officers in the Friendly City can now apply for the Youth in Policing Initiative.

WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is now accepting applications for the Youth in Policing Initiative.

It offers a paid summer job for high school students between the ages of 15 and 18 who live in the Friendly City.

Community Service Officer Shaylyn Jackson says it's great for those who may be thinking about pursuing policing as a career.

"They get to learn about the different parts of the police service and get to know the ins and outs of policing. They get to participate in a lot of great opportunities and experiences and they get lots of different training."

She adds they will also get to participate in a youth conference.

"This program is facilitated at lots of different police services so we do a conference for all of the students across Ontario that are participating in this program."

The Youth in Policing Initiative is also a mentorship program geared towards Youth at Risk. Jackson says it's a very broad term but essentially a Youth at Risk is someone who may be at risk of victimization or offending based their experiences or their background.

It's an eight week program which runs from Monday July 5th to Friday August 27th and you must be available to work full time Monday to Friday.

You have until Friday April 30th at 4:00 p.m. to apply and you can find more information online here.

The Youth in Policing Initiative is a partnership with the Ministry of Youth Services and only one applicant will be accepted in Woodstock this year.
