A new transitional housing unit has opened for homeless youth in our community.
OXFORD COUNTY - Oxford County has joined forces with the Oxford County Community Health Centre (OCCHC) to create a transitional housing unit for youth.
Transitional housing provides someone homeless with a place to stay for a year and it also provides them with supports so they can secure their own stable housing.
Caitlin Clause, the Youth Outreach & Support Coordinator for OCCHC, explains this new housing unit is currently helping four teens between the ages of 16 and 17.
"Not all youth receive the same level of support in nurturing their interests or in acquiring the skills necessary to achieve their goals. Youth transitional housing aims to bridge this gap by offering wraparound support to those who might not find it elsewhere. It is designed to uplift youth by providing a better environment where they can develop their skills and interests and learn how to create the future they desire."
On top of helping the tenants find a place to live, the youth transitional housing unit will also provide programs that will help the tenants understand income supports, learn life skills, secure transportation, and seek education and training.
You can find more information about all of the transitional housing programs in Oxford County online here.
