The Municipal Enforcement Unit will now handle by-law complaints for Zorra Township.
ZORRA TOWNSHIP - Zorra Township has decided to hire an independent contactor for by-law enforcement.
The Municipal Enforcement Unit will be handling the Township's by-law complaints moving forward.
Matthew Paul is currently listed as the By-law Enforcement Officer on the Township's website, but he has recently taken on a new role as the Deputy Chief Building Official.
CAO Don MacLeod says they decided to consider hiring the MEU after discovering that it already handles by-law enforcement for Norwich, South-West Oxford and Blandford-Blenheim.
"We interviewed the firm and we were impressed by what they told us. The cost also seemed to fit within what we were paying previously so I think it was a smart fit for the Township to move in that direction."
MacLeod says local residents shouldn't notice much of a difference whenever they file a complaint.
"The calls will still come to the Township Office. Our staff will triage them to see if it requires the Municipal Enforcement Unit to come out. If it's a small routine matter our staff will still deal with it unless it needs to be escalated, then we could involve MEU."
MacLeod has noticed no difference in the number of by-law complaints since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. He says the call volume has been fairly consistent over the past three years.
