Oxford County Public Health is asking everyone to rethink their drinking and know the risks of overindulgence
An alarming statistic has been released by Oxford County Public Health: 1 in 5 Oxford County residents could be considered 'heavy drinkers.'
A 'heavy drinker' is defined as someone consuming 5 or more alcoholic drinks on one occasion, once a month or more.
Supervisor for Health Promotion with Oxford County Public Health Mike Gorgey explains some of the dangers of 'binge drinking.' "Binge drinking is really one of the more dangerous forms of alcohol consumption - it can lead to a lot of different negative outcomes including alcohol poisoning, violence, injuries, car crashes, long term health effects, liver cirrhosis, heart problems, and cancer. It is something that we really need to address."
Gorgey says Canada’s Low-Risk Alcohol Drinking Guidelines has a few recommendations when it comes to drinking. "Canada has a set of low risk drinking guidelines: for women no more than 10 drinks per week, no more than 2 drinks a day on most days. For men no more than 15 drinks a week, no more than 3 drinks on a day."
Gorgey is reminding those holding parties this holiday season to be responsible. "If you're a host just inform yourself on some of the issues that can come with hosting parities over the Christmas season. A lot of us grew up in this area where alcohol was just embedded in our culture. Now we have learned a little bit more about some of the long term health effects that come with indulging in high risk drinking behaviours, so what we are trying to do is raise awareness for people."
