It could be a couple of days before the election is called as mail in ballots will not be counted tonight. Locally we have around 2,000 mail in ballots for the Oxford County riding.
It could be a day, maybe even two, before we know who won the Federal election.
According to elections Canada, 6.8 million people voted early this year. Most of those ballots were cast at advance polls over a week ago. Those votes will be counted tonight. Hundreds of thousands of people also voted by mail this year. Those votes will not be counted until tomorrow at the earliest, as they have to go through a thorough screening process. This means, if it is a tight race, we might not have the results tonight.
Locally, roughly 2,000 people voted by mail in Oxford County, meaning we will not be able to call the election, if it is a tight race.
Most ridings will be decided tonight, however Elections Canada has said it could take up to four days to finish counting all of the special mail in ballots. This means, some races may not have official winners for a couple of days.
