6 Day Garbage Cycle?

Residents asked to weigh in on Waste Management Strategy Draft Report

The days of having a set garbage collection day may be coming to an end. 

The Waste Management Strategy Draft Report was presented to County Council Wednesday.

Waste Management Coordinator Pamela Antonio says if approved, residents would have their garbage and recycling picked up every six business days. 

"It would mean that your collection day would actually advance forward each week and it would mean that we would eliminate Saturday collections and we would actually be able to increase our recycling frequency from biweekly to basically a weekly schedule."

Antonio says the move would come with a cost savings to the County. 

"Somewhere in and around 10-15 percent of the annual curbside collection costs. I believe that dollar figure is estimated to be around $300,000 a year, however to really know for certain we would have to go out for bid and see what the bids coming back would show us."

Antonio says another option brought forth was to add an additional recycling bin to homes at a cost of $500,000 to implement in hopes of reducing waste by an additional 9 percent.

"Should council decide that we want to stay with our current biweekly recycling system then yes we would probably move forward with an additional blue box bin but if we were to go to something that was more weekly, probably that need wouldn't be there."

Woodstock Mayor Pat Sobeski expressed concern over confusion with a six day collection cycle and trash being out at the curb for extended periods of time. 

Antonio said the 6 day cycle is currently in use in London, Ontario and residents would be given a collection calendar to help to reduce the confusion of having a moving collection day. 

She says it would mean residents would get 42 collections per year. 

Residents will have 6 weeks to comment on the various suggestions presented in the report.
