A 72 Hour Kit Can Help You In An Emergency Situation

A 72 hour kit is being recommended now that Old Man Winter has settled in the Friendly City.

WOODSTOCK - With homes losing power in the most recent ice storm, the Woodstock Fire Department want you to be ready if it happens again.

A 72 hour kit is being recommended for your car and home when disaster strikes.

Public Information Coordinator with the Woodstock Fire Department, Lisa Woods, explains what needs to be in them, "If power does go out at your home make sure you have got batteries, a flashlight, a crank radio so you can get the information you need if you have to evacuate, cash in case debit machines are down but you still need to get something, can foods, and a manual can opener.  If you do have matches and lighters make sure you are using candles in a sturdy container on a non-combustible surface."

The Woodstock Fire Department wants you to be prepared in case of an emergency, and Woods says it is important to restock your supplies.

"It is also important not only  for your home but to have one ready for your car as well.  You should be looking at it a few times of year at least make sure your water hasn't been sitting in frozen and unfrozen too many times the same with overheating in the summer time."

"Generators do create carbon monoxide so you want to move them away from your home, same with warming your cars up in the garage that creates carbon monoxide that can seep in the doors and windows and create a carbon monoxide situation in your home, says Woods. "Make sure you have your smoke and CO alarms working we want you checking those alarms at least once a month and changing the batteries at least twice a year, we want you to do it now for sure."

Woods says reminding everyone that if they leave their home turn the power off, as a Woodstock family forgot to do that with their stove and it caused a house fire.
