It isn't getting any cheaper to feed a family, but a local forum next week is looking to try and take some of that pressure off in the future. Food Security in the County, and a Food Charter are up for discussion in a free event at the Elm Hurst Inn in Ingersoll. Local Agriculture producers, health and social workers and concerned citizens are working to establish greater access to nutritious food for every citizen. Sue Hillborn in one of the farmers on board with the project, and says in 2011, it cost $189 a week to nutritiously feed a family of 4. "And that's pretty shocking when you think that's almost $800 a month just to feed people. And that doesn't include your rent, etc. So, it's an issue we need to get on top of and I think we're all concerned and want to make sure all our neighbours have enough food." It's no surprise then that a recent survey showed 9.3% of local residents reported they couldn't necessarily afford to eat nutritiously. Next week's forum will be held at Ingersoll's Elm Hurst Inn from 7-9PM, and will hear from guest speaker Joan Brady, who has worked extensively on a Food Security project in Huron County. There will also be a discussion on where the Oxford County Food Charter is at, and where it needs to go. Hillborn is hoping for more participation in the project, and invites anyone interested out to the Elm Hurst to hear more. More details on the forum are here.
