The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is on the lookout for some new volunteers.
OXFORD COUNTY - The Alzheimer's Society of Oxford is looking for some extra help with their Volunteer Companion Program.
Those who sign up will be matched with someone in their community with Alzheimer's or Dementia. They will get to spend time together; whether it's just sitting down for a coffee or going out for a drive.
Executive Director Shelley Green explains how this can benefit the patient.
"Social interaction is just so important for our welfare. We need companionship we need to have that time with other people to feel valued and cared for."
The one on one communication also helps stimulate the patient's brain.
Green adds it also gives their caregivers a break.
"Some our family members may have the opportunity to go do some shopping, they may go and meet a friend for coffee, they may go to attend an appointment they need to attend for themselves, they may go to a book club or anything they enjoy to have that break. It is so important to feel refreshed and to be able to continue on in their responsibility as a family member who is caring for someone who has Dementia or Alzheimer's."
Those interested in volunteering can call the Alzheimer's Society Oxford; 519-421-2466. Ask to speak with Robyn Fox, the Volunteer Companion Program Coordinator.
