A record breaking 1,119 babies were born at Woodstock Hospital in 2024.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Hospital has set a new record for the amount of births in a single year.
It welcomed 1,119 babies in 2024, including four sets of twins. This continues the upward trend that was set in 2023, when 1,057 babies were born.
The summer months were also the busiest for child births last year with 107 babies born in June, 103 babies born in July and 128 babies born in August.
Diane Running, the Director of Maternal Child/Women’s Health, says a decent amount of the babies were also delivered by midwives last year.
"Here at the hospital we do support the Thames Valley Midwives, they are a group based out of London but they also support Oxford County. Eight percent of our deliveries were accounted to midwife deliveries, so those numbers were also up."
She attributes the total child birth increase to population growth and the level of care at the hospital.
"I really do think my team does a really good job, and with doing a good job we get more business. We've been seeing an increased number of people outside of our catchment area (Oxford County) coming to out the hospital as well because we have been doing such a good job here."
Running says obstetrics is a very unpredictable field to work in because babies come on their own schedule. With that being said, she's really grateful for dedicated nurses, obstetricians, and support staff in Woodstock.
"They truly come together like a true team should and they ensure safe and quality care for patients all of the time. Their commitment does not go unnoticed and I am always very grateful for all of the work everyone does on the unit."
The London Health Sciences Centre also recorded a record number of child births in 2024 with 6,452 babies born between January 1st and December 31st. This included 135 sets of twins and six sets of triplets.
