Back to School Traffic Blitz

Woodstock Police will be conducting a back to school traffic blitz.

WOODSTOCK - Woodstock Police will be conducting a back to school traffic blitz.

They will be out in full force from August 31st to September 13th conducting daily targeted and directed enforcement in school safety zones. Constable Nikki VanLeeuwen tells Heart FM why they are doing the blitz now before school starts.

"Basically to educate the community, things are going to start getting busy and ramp up around school areas as kids head back to school and their is a high risk for injury during that time as kids are sometimes not paying attention going from vehicle to vehicle or getting off the bus and we want to make sure that as a community we are taking all of the necessary steps to ensure public safety."

She notes police want motorists to be paying close attention to the roads, especially when the youngsters head back to school on September 8th. Woodstock Police are asking parents to educate their children about bus safety, railway safety, traffic safety and walking to school safety. Woodstock Police are asking motorists to take extra care this school year in keeping our children safe.

Police will be watching for;

"    Distracted Drivers - cell phone use
"    Speeding - most school zones have posted 40 km per hour zone laws
"    Seatbelt Infractions - children who are 8 years old,  4'9" and 80 lbs  need to be in a booster seat
"    Drivers that are in no parking and no stopping zones

Safety Tips for Motorists;

"    Keep your eyes on the road and hands on the wheel
"    Plan ahead - don't be in a rush
"    Watch for children biking, walking and running in school areas
"    Obey school bus stop signals
"    Stop for School Crossing Guards
