A resident in Ingersoll is undergoing preventative rabies treatment after coming into contact with an infected bat.
INGERSOLL - Southwestern Public Health has confirmed a case of rabies in a bat in Ingersoll.
A resident discovered what appeared to be an injured bat on Saturday. The person made contact with the bat, trying to move it. The bat was taken in for testing and it has rabies. The resident is now undergoing preventative rabies treatment.
Program Manager for Infectious Diseases at Southwestern Public Health Elain Reddick says it is for residents to always seek medical attention if they are bitten by a bat, or any animal, whether it is wild or not.
"This case should also be a reminder for residents to avoid contact with wildlife, always supervise pets outdoors, and vaccinate pets against rabies as advised by their vet.”
To keep your pets and family rabies-free:
- Make sure your pet vaccinations are up to date.
- Keep your pets indoors at night.
- Teach children to stay away from wild animals and unfamiliar dogs and cats.
- Supervise children around all pets and animals.
- Always ask permission from a pet owner before trying to touch an animal.
- Do not attempt to touch or feed wild animals.
