After 28 years serving Oxford County, a dedicated Public Health Nurse is looking forward to retirement.
Oxford County Public Health is saying a very fond farewell to a public health nurse who touched many lives.
Lorna Boratto was a part of many different initiatives focused on keeping Oxford County healthy, and she looks back on some of the projects she's most fond of. "Our work with trails and trying to increase the number of trails and the awareness of trails that we do have here in the County. The work that we've done with bicycle infrastructure - so now we have share the road signs and a few bike lanes. I have had no influence over it, but more and more people are out there on their bike."
She hopes that Public Health will continue to educate the public on the importance of staying active. "The two areas that I've really focused on is physical activity and injury prevention and for us to continue to move, to think about an active lifestyle and particularly doing it safely, whether it's in sport and the prevention or decreased risk of concussions, to being on our bicycles, to driving safely."
During her tenure, Boratto touched many lives. She says it was amazing to watch the way Public Health grew over almost three decades. Her parting words encouraged people to get out, enjoy life, and enjoy the wonderful surroundings we have here. "Oxford has so much to offer and it is a beautiful, beautiful place to be with gorgeous rolling country hills and with the agriculture and produce that we have here. And I think that the vision that they have moving forward with that is really exciting."
Boratto's last day in office is December 18th. Retirement will likely be a quiet time, but she says she plans to continue to ride her bike, stay active, and she'll even be welcoming a new grandchild in April.
