Big Display Draws Attention to Big Problems

The Ontario Health Coalition is touring with a giant rocking chair to draw attention to problems with long term care.

WOODSTOCK - The Ontario Health Coalition is bringing a giant rocking chair to Tillsonburg and Woodstock. 

They are trying to raise awareness about improving the care standards at long term facilities and will visit 19 towns in Ontario. Tour Lead Peter Boyle tells Heart FM why they bring a 10 foot tall wooden rocking chair with them. 

"The rocking chair is a symbol of care. The two main messages we are trying to get out to the government is the inadequate care levels with the long wait lists and the poor access to patient care." 

Boyle says the statistics show that on Ontario's long term care homes more than 18,500 hospital beds have been closed since 1990 and right now 20,000 people are on a wait lists for long-term care home spaces. Some of them have been on the wait list for over a decade. 

They will be in Tillsonburg at 1 p.m. on Broadway Street and then across the street from the Caressant Care home in Woodstock at 3:30 p.m.
