Two new immigration streams announced for Ukrainians looking for a safe haven in Canada.
The federal government has announced new aids for Ukrainians looking to temporarily immigrate to Canada, as well as trade action against Russia.
During a news conference this morning, Immigration Minister Sean Fraser said the government will provide fast-tracked emergency visas to an unlimited number of Ukrainians who want to come to Canada on a temporary basis up to two years.
He noted the visas will take just weeks to process instead of a year, and the application process is expected to start in about two weeks.
Most visa requirements will be waived, though individuals will need to complete a "simple" application form and provide biometrics for background and security screening.
People who arrive under this stream will also be eligible for a work or study permit allowing them to take a job with any Canadian employer or enroll in an educational program.
As well, a new reunification program has been announced for Ukrainians with family in Canada who wish to come here permanently.
Officials say more details on the reunification program will be released in the coming weeks.
Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland announced at the same conference that a 35 percent tariff has been imposed on all Russian exports to Canada.
She also noted new sanctions have been imposed against 10 executives with Gazprom, a Russian state-owned energy company, and Rosneft, Russia's leading oil company.
The country also plans to send 4,500 rocket launchers and 7,500 hand grenades from its existing stockpile to Ukraine.
